Liam began Aikido at the start of 1984 in Christchurch and was instantly attracted to the Aikido of Junichi Nishimura Sensei when he first visited Christchurch in 1987. He started his own Aikido club Ōtautahi Aikido in 1991, training the Buikukai style of Junichi Sensei. In 2016 he was awarded the rank of 5th Dan Aikikai by the Osaka Buikukai.
After being introduced to Aunkai by Filip Maric he hosted Akuzawa Sensei and Manabu Hanshi in Christchurch in November 2014. Liam was inspired by the principles and possibilities Aunkai offered as a martial art in its own right and to Aikido practitioners. He started an official Aunkai Study Group at the start of 2015 and continues to be inspired by regular trips to Japan.
